The Art of Conversation – Finding Nemo
In this session of the Art of Conversation, we shared about and practiced finding agreement in disagreement.
Nemo is the common point, which everyone likes and is happy.
You cannot find Nemo by staying at the same place. You need to travel through different areas to seek Nemo out. Generally, there are 3 areas for you to seek Nemo. One is in the area of preferences and opinions. It is easy to find each other agreeable and similar if you both have the same preferences and opinions. You two may in fact be twins.
However, the chance of finding your twin self is usually small and hence you may have to go to the next area to seek Nemo, which is in the area of personal values. You might enjoy arts while your sister likes sports, but in both activities you enjoy the same sense of personal satisfaction from character development. So you both love growth and development! Here is Nemo!
But in odd chances you may find a complete opposite of you and there seems to be absolutely nothing common. Fret not because Nemo still exists in the area of fundamental values which 99.9% of human being agree on, for example, the value of life, the desirability of goodness etc. If you ever run out of things to agree on, agree that you are all fellow human beings.
What if you meet that remaining 0.1%? Well, you have an oddball which has 50% chance of being an alien. Decide if you should run for your life or continue conversing. In this case, Nemo has clearly decided not to be found already.
